37 - Final Chapter

17 days later.
Ryan tapped his pen on his desk, the sound resounding through the empty office. The stack of paperwork in front of him wasn’t going to do itself, but the last thing on his mind was recruit progression reports. The paperwork had built up whilst he had been...distracted, but like a faithful animal, it was always waiting.
Jones’ defense had worked for him – a battlefield accident, conflicting priorities, the primary urge not to cause harm to the innocent...It hadn’t come without punishment, harsh punishment, but it was a price he willingly paid, it was better than the alternative.
He carefully read through the report in front of him, one of Emma’s exit reports, she wasn’t happy, but he didn’t care, he wasn’t there to please, he was there to do his job. He gladly signed the piece of the paper that said he was still fit to lead, tucked it into its folder and sent it on.
There was a knock at his door.
‘Come,’ he said.
The door handle twisted and the agent stepped inside, taking small, unsure steps with – apparently afraid of bothering him – a groundless worry, as any distraction from paperwork was a welcome intrusion.
He smiled at his visitor, then stood and extended a hand to the agent, it stared at him for a moment, then grabbed the outstretched hand. ‘Welcome, Agent Mimosa.’

They recycled parts of her into an agent!!! NOOOOOOO!
Why is he so cruel to himself as to name this agent Mimosa... maybe she even looks like her.
But I'm betting this isn't Spyder at all. No memories, no bold voice, no nothing like it.
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
...if it wasn't Stef, why would he be smiling at her?
Reality is a formality.
He's self deluding himself.
Or he want's to be nice to the new agent.
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
...
What's it going to take to convince you? Make it snappy, I'm honestly really close to falling asleep on my lappy...
Reality is a formality.
... guaranteeing/promising me (without fingers crossed)
That this agent, is the hacker we've known to love, crazy though she still is.
But, if she is an agent, she'd have to have inbuilt directives or something.
...
Stormy: please pretty please with sugar on top. Edit that last chapter and say that Ryan smiles at her while requiring a cookie.
Then I'm sure.
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
...hereby solemnly swear that this new agent is our dear, beloved, crazy, voices-in-her-head, dirty-shoed little hacker girl.
Not editing to put in a cookie...I want the punchline to stay as is *in-need-of-sleep-cry*
Agent Stef is Stef...can the happy start now?
Reality is a formality.
Being good is now over. I no longer have to hold back, and Stef lives on and gets to keep working for the Agency as an immortal. What better place for a person who can't die.
I am sure that she is more nuts than usual, I mean being able to walk into a blackout zone and come out again after getting killed who knows how many times will mess a person up more.
Seriously dude, clap yourself on the back, and feel awesome. And take a deep breath, you can finally stop having to censor yourself. ^_^
I mean being able to walk into a blackout zone and come out again after getting killed
Mwhahahaha...maybe not quite...
Reality is a formality.
You're saying that as if Angels are just recycled material, build from spare parts and junk.. and rusted and ugly on the inside, with a thin layer of cheap paint on the top :(
Why do you hate them so much? :(
...I kinda like that description, and makes me think of junk yard steampunk robots...
At least Stef would be really cheap, she's so tiny she wouldn't require (hehe, require) much paint. :P
Reality is a formality.
I knew it! I bloody knew it! Okies, Stormy, this was my theory (no use putting in the details I've been thinking about last night/morning/better part of the afternoon): Stef dies and becomes an agent.
First hint came after I read Agents and remembered the list of reactions you gave us for the remaining chapters of MH. "OK, Stormy, what did you just do?" -> seemed just perfect (it was a moment of "SO THAT'S IT!!!"). And other details in the Agents stories fit/hint, so it was the only possible outcome. ^_^
This being said, can't say I'm wildly happy about the ending - he's happy someone is distracting him, not explicitly happy to see her. And she's shy and worried (which kinda makes sense, she caused all that trouble, so it's natural for her to be worried). And we don't really know how much of Stef is left in agent Stef. Plus, we don't know what his punishment was, how things changed in the Agency, if he knew she had become an agent, if Jones and Taylor knew she had become an agent, their reactions, her reaction, the bold voice's reaction, her reaction to him calling her 'agent Mimosa', how her special kinda life and death will affect her agent traits, the exact, explicit reason why she has become an agent etc. So... how about an epilogue? ^_^ *winkwink* *nudgenudge* *promises cookies* Pwetty pweeeease?
*goes mope*
Resident owl.
Agents? What's that??
Did I miss something cool? :(
...just that the MV is based off a Matrix fanfic series I used to write. >_>
Fanfiction.net search for "Stormhawk" at your own risk.
Reality is a formality.
>_> *throws keyboard at Stormy*
It's very cool. ^_^
(read almost all of them and loved them :D)
Resident owl.
I mean, there were a couple of cool ideas, but for the most part I look back and wonder what the hell I was thinking and if I could have possibly wedged any more angst in there. -_-
(Though, if you've read any of the ones with Jonas in them...hoo boy, you are going to love what I've done with him for MV. :D).
Reality is a formality.
...the stories may be less polished than MF/MH, but still kick-ass!
Yuppers, read some with Jonas in them! *wants to know*
Resident owl.
...it's kind of taking his "evil god" thing up a notch (though not making him an actual god, and making him a lot, lot, lot more evil). It'll all be in book #4, which is awesome in and of itself, because it's a recycled Doctor Who fan project idea I had to abandon.
Reality is a formality.
I'm really, really curious as to how you'll integrate him in the story! Can that be something like the Jonas-in-Agents thing?
Resident owl.
...damnit, why did you ask me when my spoiler-buffer is barely functional? Ok, let's see what I can say that doesn't give away major plot points.
Ok, for starters, he's not from Earth (least not from this Earth, the one point that I'm still debating is whether or not the planet in question for #4 is a regular alien world or just an alterna-Earth, I have a feeling I'll cheap out and go for the latter, though the point for the moment is, he's not from our Earth), and also for starters, he's an Agent.
He's one, however, that has gone truly power mad, has leveraged a lot of control and basically controls the world by being in charge of most of the large corporations (...I'm not explaining this well, sorry). And no, they can't do the sensible thing and recycle him cause...he's made himself untouchable, and any time anyone tried to take him down, they kind of died (he's really not shy about offing other agents).
Reality is a formality.
*thinks of ways of making Stormy spoil more* *evil grin*
Ahem.
I think I understand how he got all that control. Makes sense.
So Agents can't touch him, but what about Enforcers?
Resident owl.
I will resist...poorly...
So Agents can't touch him, but what about Enforcers?
Enforcer 1: Dude, look, another dead agent.
Enforcer 2: Shouldn't we, um, stop him? That's like 50 this week.
Jonas: MWHAHAHHAHA, I am god, you can't stop me!
Enforcers: ...
Enforcer 1: Fuck that noise, Travel Scrabble?
Reality is a formality.
Travel Scrabble, heh :p
But can anybody kill an Enforcer? And how are they made? And how are they different from agents?
Resident owl.
...aren't that much different to an agent, it's more that they...words...um...
*thinks, snoozes, thinks*
Enforcers have admin privileges that regular agents don't! Same basic type of being, but they're the higher ups, so they get to make bigger decisions than Joe Agent can. >_>
Reality is a formality.
So they have root access. ^_^
Resident owl.
Good question btw!!
We've just seen 2 enforcers handle Stef, but we barely know about them.
I'm curious, how do they look O_o
...I never described them, did I? o_o Lazy author is lazy, sorry.
...plus I never really thought about it. Whenever I think about them, I think of those guys from Day Watch that mediate between the Night Watch and the Day Watch (I think they might have been twins, they showed up at the end of the movie), because they serve a similar function.
Um, I'll write in descriptions next time they appear, but for the moment, like 90% of the MV characters, just imagine dudes in suits.
Tired author is tired. I think I need sugar. Is it too early for ice-cream?
Reality is a formality.
...too early for ice-cream. O_O And you have to get an extra scoop as penance for even thinking that!
Resident owl.
*goes to get ice-cream*
Reality is a formality.
Now, i need to get icecream again.
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
What you gonna get?
Reality is a formality.
... as always.
[I'm a boring kinda guy]
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
is not boring. Chocolate is the best.
*steals AL13N's ice-cream*
Resident owl.
..passion fruit!
Resident owl.
...do want. *salivates*
Reality is a formality.
*give some ice-cream to Stormy, and some to Flex too, so he won't feel left out*
Resident owl.
This'll probably mean torture for you guys, so, this is a special from me :-D
a suspicious link-like thingie

- 2 cookie cigarello's manually filled with chocolate-sauce (until it runs out the bottom)
- extra chocolate sauce on top everywhere
- bresilienne nuts op top
Look at the link and weep/hate me

Resident owl.
I'm all out of IceCream today :S
Totally going shopping tomorrow for vanilla or caramel :)
I didn't mean to flaunt my ice-cream. ;_;
Reality is a formality.
...and handle Stef bow chika wow wow...I'm imagining a bad pr0ny version of that scene now...
I HATE YOU BRAIN.
Reality is a formality.
...AL13N will love you for this so very much!
LOL!
Resident owl.
This absolutely would not work as an agent, because it would give an enemy a second shot at her, or even time enough to remove the mirror (if they knew about it), or drop a blackout bomb, toss her in a truck and make out with her. It's fine for little hacker girls, but not for agents.
Yeah, this is totally moving in the wrong direction >_>
Make some brains squeak, you know you want to! :p
Resident owl.
...I could just tell you guys about another plot I abandoned ages ago...
Reality is a formality.
Please do! :)
...I had this long-ago abandoned plotline (seriously, this was thrown out of the window a lot earlier than that bizarre possession plot discussed in the forums) wherein Stef gets kidnapped by Solstice (cause, yanno, she's a girl and girls are only good for getting kidnapped >_>).
The usual gamut of torture, interrogation and experimentation begins (had this really, I'm not gonna say cool, more like cruel, image of them ripping her arm off and drilling a hook into her shoulder and using that to chain her to the roof...yeah, I know, I'm weird in the head).
Her main torturer/scientist-in-charge dude was a sadistic son of a bitch, like would give Taylor a run for his money when it comes to inflicting harm (though more surgical, rather than *punch, punch, roundhouse*).
There however was also this tech guy who would clean up the area after each experiment/check her chains/etc, and he was actually kinda nice (for a Solstice), like, would remember to feed her on time and stuff.
Time goes on (this was a rather protracted kidnapping, talking weeks here), and he genuinely starts to be nice to her, which is a nice break from all the torture, and she begins to like him (yay, Stockholm syndrome!)
Then, dun, dun, dun...it gets revealed that her main torturer dude and her only friend are ONE AND THE SAME! O_O He's got a split personality disorder (yes, yes, I know it's "dissociative personality disorder, but that's such a pain to type out), and his manifests (almost always) outwardly in the cliche Jekyll/Hyde manner, rather than that of her Voice.
So, basically, she does the only thing she can do...kills him the next time the good guy is in charge of the body.
...wheee, that was long and pointless. I had a lot of very stupid plots back in the day, let's be glad I discarded them.
Reality is a formality.
I like this sciency torture type!
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
Now that's torture there! Had the guy not been Solstice, Taylor would have wanted to adopt him and raise him as his own sadistic and violent little boy, Mags would have wanted to marry him, and the Parkers would often welcome him in the infirmary to mess with their patients! ^_^
Resident owl.
...that I have a large concentration of uber-violent malevolent freaks in the one building, don't I?
[Also, also, this is why I think Mags and Taylor should have a kid, that way they can raise him (cause it would have to be a him) to be the perfect little soldier].
Reality is a formality.
Definitely a dream come true ^_^
Resident owl.
cruel, image of them ripping her arm off and drilling a hook into her shoulder and using that to chain her to the roof
In the middle of reading this, I was actually imagining how this would work, with the bones, internal organs and all, and how her weight would not rip out the hook, and how to make the hook hold well in there >_<
Anyway, not in the main story, but it would make an interesting fanfic.. except for the part that you're not actually a fan, but the author, you know >_>
...was basically the hook into the shoulder bone, and enough chain to let her sag mostly to the floor, but not completely, therefore forcing her to stay awake more, because she couldn't lie down and sleep, and any sleep she managed to get would be interrupted as soon as she made a movement (cause it would hurt/would lose her balance).
I could do it, I am allowed to write non-canon stuff, but it's way too grimdark and I think I'm over that (at least for the moment).
Reality is a formality.
...Flex to write it! ^_^
Resident owl.
.. I don't think the shoulder bone will hold the whole body's weight.. It would probably snap itself, or dislocate/snap her neck somehow.. :(
Though.. *thinks, touches*
It might work, but it's still kind of hard to attach..
I would think more in terms of multiple smaller hooks attaching to the clavicle, shoulder bone and the ribcage..
Multiple smaller points - more durability :D
...owie, owie, owie, seriously, dude that made me cringe.
Like Bufi said, WRITE IT!
Reality is a formality.
You're already visualising it, so write it! :D
Resident owl.
..that's a cool idea, and AL13N has written a violent, gory fic (so there's a precedent), so why don't you write one too? ^_^ *wink wink* *nudge nudge*
Resident owl.
.. If I end up writing one, it'll be quite horrible :(
...and even if it was, we'd read it anyway, so do it!
(Actually, filling the gap between now and the beginning of MS with fan-written content isn't a bad idea...).
[Well, that and Shimmerfall, *goes to bug Randi*]
Reality is a formality.
Pull a nice marketing stunt! ^_^
(and maybe finish giving me feedback so I can maybe [if I don't chicken out first] post First Blood too? :p)
Resident owl.
I kinda got carried away with this, and for that, I'm sorry. Feedback will be on its way when I'm sane again, and YOU'D BETTER POST IT, OR WE'LL DENY YOU COOKIES!
Reality is a formality.
*gulp* okies...
And yanno I don't mind you getting carried away with awesomeness MH ^_^
Resident owl.
...come on, Flex, we'll read and give constructive comments ^_^
Resident owl.
Oh, I don't know..
You know I'm not a writer, right? Far from it >_<
I might try though, might be interesting to try something new )

Glad you guessed. :) (So that's one less person crying during the last chapter, shiny).
This being said, can't say I'm wildly happy about the ending - he's happy someone is distracting him, not explicitly happy to see her.
There are reasons for this, he didn't suddenly turn heartless. Besides if he went *jumps up from desk* *huggle* *cookie* you'd know who it was immediately.
And she's shy and worried
She woke up, totally alone, the last thing she remembers is...yanno, thinking she's really, really dying this time, so she's allowed.
And we don't really know how much of Stef is left in agent Stef.
Everything. Including the Voice. And the dirty shoes. And the cookies. She's Stef, with some additions.
Plus, we don't know what his punishment was
...unpleasant, tantamount to torture, but short and over and done with.
how things changed in the Agency
Does Taylor being more angry count? Other than that, not much, least not yet.
if he knew she had become an agent, if Jones and Taylor knew she had become an agent
He did about five minutes after she got gassed. Jonesy decided it, Taylor found out later.
So... how about an epilogue?
NO CAN HAS EPILOGUE.
...however, you can have the first third/half of book three dealing with all of this, covering the 17-day intervening period, going over everything, explaining everything, and then finish that section with expanding/completing this scene.
But Stormy, you ask, WHY THE HELL DIDN'T YOU PUT THAT STUFF IN HERE?
1) I like it being a punchline ending, but more importantly 2) MH is about Stef the girl, MS is about Stef the agent, all of that stuff really doesn't have a place in this story.
You get to see everything, but for the moment, you know she's safe, and you can relax and breathe.
Reality is a formality.
unpleasant, tantamount to torture, but short and over and done with.
Care to expand on that? *winkwink*
He did about five minutes after she got gassed.
And how did he react?

Okies, that works :p
*relaxes* *breathes* *figures out she's run out of cookies* *wails*
Resident owl.
Care to expand on that? *winkwink*
It's kinda related to their brain-rape-y power, not very pleasant, possible involves induced glitches and generally hurts like a mofo.
And how did he react?
You'll get to see it, but it's something along the lines of "oh thank god, *collapse*".
*hands over more cookies*
Reality is a formality.
...messing with him from the inside. Suckiest, it are. Good thing they still let him be in charge of the Agency...
*noms on cookies*
Resident owl.
..it sucks, but it's only temporary, it's kind of like hitting a dog with a newspaper, a "don't fucking do that again" measure. >_>
Reality is a formality.
something along the lines of "oh thank god, *collapse*".
No wonder he collapsed.. As I understood, Jones still didn't finish curing him from that snake bite O_o
Though it must have hurt for him to see his recruit to be disintegrated like that >_<
...yeah, he was still sick and woozy. >_>
Though it must have hurt for him to see his recruit to be disintegrated like that >_<
Yeah, also cause he figured he was next in line to get gassed.
Reality is a formality.
...however, you can have the first third/half of book three dealing with all of this, covering the 17-day intervening period, going over everything, explaining everything, and then finish that section with expanding/completing this scene.
Oooh!! I was wondering why exactly 17 days, and what happened within that time.. Glad to know that I will get my answers! ^_^
To give the non-spoilery version, it's not exactly quick or easy to covert human + mirror to human + mirror + agent, kinda involves writing a new version of the OS for a start. >_>
Reality is a formality.
...she keeps the mirror or something?
Resident owl.
It's still right there in her chest.
It'll be explained why, rather well, by Jonesy in #3. :) (It's actually like one of the only scenes I've written for it).
Reality is a formality.
*is impatient*
Won't that make her very vulnerable?
Resident owl.
Actually, it would be the other way around, I think..
The mirror could give her special regenerative powers.. Remember how Ryan almost died once? Steff can still live with being killed 12 times in a row, and she'll only have scars to tell about it :)
...with the simple layer of skin between the heart and the outside world, the mirror would be kinda in danger. And what happens if the mirror's power expires while she's bleeding in a blackout zone? >_>
Resident owl.
She still has her regular agent regenerative powers )
...don't work in blackout zones. :P
(But everywhere else, yeah, she's got her regen powers).
Reality is a formality.
oh duh.. Of course >_<
...in blackout zones. >_>
Resident owl.
...you're missing something big here. If the mirror expired (which it wouldn't, keeping one little hacker girl up isn't exactly a big deal for it), then Stef would just be dead, plain dead with no chance of getting back up.
(Except possibly as that horrible Agent-Mimosa-without-the-Stef-part that you guys thought I was doing, but Stef-Stef would be gone and dead forever).
Reality is a formality.
Waitaminute.. But she's not a human any more.. And didn't you say that all of the internal organs can be restored/recreated from 'ash'.. I would have thought it would work the same with Stef.. Spare parts and junk yard and all :(
I knew she's not invincible, but this actually limits her lifespan, and makes her more vulnerable than others :(
...she is is tied to the mirror. No mirror, no soul, no Stef, they can't get rid of it.
And yeah, she can regen everything...except her heart, unless she's in a blackout zone, it's a trade-off that unfortunately has to be made. We'll just have to keep the silly girl out of blackout zones, which isn't too hard, considering the sensible thing to do is run the hell away from them. :P
Reality is a formality.
which isn't too hard, considering the sensible thing to do is run the hell away from them. :P
Come on.. You seriously think she'll just run away? Too many time we've seen her do things against any logic, normal, crazy or Voice-y =/
Reality is a formality.
...she's already had her share of blackout zone-suckiness, I doubt she'll ever want to go near one again, ever ^_^
Resident owl.
That's what I thought after they both almost got killed in the Ice-Cream shop..
And then she runs to 2 ARMED Solstice, and starts hitting them with a bar/pole/stick thing O_o
After being dead for a month no less, and having trouble using her body again, and being confused about not having a heart... =/
She's a slow learner, isn't she?
...that that wasn't a blackout zone. *goes check* Anyhow, that must have been a random burst of hero-ness. She had to do something to feel alive again, no? :-/
Resident owl.
...was trying to be a good girl for her agent, and...well, it was an excuse to beat someone with a pipe. :P
[The dude just said blackout zone to get a reaction out of her, so he could confirm that she was a "recruit"].
Reality is a formality.
...but she'll get there eventually. Especially if they sit her down and show her flash cards.
"Run away from this"
"Stay away from this"
"Don't drink this"
"Cookies are not to be eaten on missions"
>_>
Reality is a formality.
They would have to do that, Now i know why it takes 17 days... :-)
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
...you're more right than you know. A great deal of the 17 days is training/testing etc, all the prep work you need to convert someone into an agent and test out that everything is working properly.
Reality is a formality.
...beta-testing :p
Resident owl.
...didn't need to jump up and *cuddles* her, because it isn't the first time he's seen her, just the first time since she got out of beta. :D
Reality is a formality.
looking forward to seeing his reaction when he first sees her (and hers too) :D
Resident owl.
Haven't actually written that yet, but I do imagine that it will be something along the lines of:
Stef: *latches onto Ryan*
Ryan: *cuddles*
Stef: *doesn't remember to let go*
Ryan: *walks around with a hacker-shaped growth for a while*
...except, a slightly more sane version of that, but only slightly.
Reality is a formality.
...she can require cookies again, she'll be on a requiring spree! And she won't have to ask other agents to require for her, and she definitely won't ever drink anything Jonesy gives her! :p
Resident owl.
...the first time it was warm milk, the second time it was drugged, so he's no bartender in her eyes. :P
Reality is a formality.
... notice/figure it out that it WAS drugged? or did she dismiss the info, because a ton of stuff was going on at the time?
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
She didn't notice, nor did she notice that she blacked out. Tricksy Jonesy is tricksy.
Reality is a formality.
...she's generally got a reason for doing crazy stuff, she doesn't do crazy stuff just for kicks (ok, she doesn't do dangerous-crazy stuff for kicks).
So, like, unless Ryan's in there or something, you can bet your puppy-cuddling ass that she'll be running.
Reality is a formality.
...damnit, my spoiler-buffer is still down, but this isn't that big, I don't think.
Ok, in her pre-Agent state, the mirror pretty much made her invulnerable, she could die in a regular place, or die in blackout zone and get back up, it's all just internal to her, and mirror magic works everywhere. In this state, she's got an advantage over an agent.
However, when she's dead/coming back, she's extremely vulnerable, she's flopping around like a fish, unable to do anything until she's breathing again, cause like we saw, the damage is repaired before she actually regains consciousness.
This absolutely would not work as an agent, because it would give an enemy a second shot at her, or even time enough to remove the mirror (if they knew about it), or drop a blackout bomb, toss her in a truck and make off with her. It's fine for little hacker girls, but not for agents.
Thus, when she gets loaded with the agent OS, there's some tweaking of the mirror done to allow her to disappear upon death, like a regular agent, so that she isn't left in that vulnerable state. (Also, it's a lot less painful this way).
The trade-off, however, for this assurance is that she's as vulnerable as an agent when in a blackout zone. She dies in there, she's dead.
Reality is a formality.
Does that mean if she dies in a blackout zone, the mirror doesn't save and heal her, because of these "tweaks"? :(
Dead Stef is dead.
Reality is a formality.
Awesome!!!!!
Thanks, even though there's still a lot to be said, I love the ending, and it just feels.. good :)
*noms on the last of the cookie crumbs*
Glad you approve. :) *hands over cookies and warm puppies*
Reality is a formality.
...said you liked puppies. >_>
Resident owl.
...cause they're nice and warm and soft...

for purposes other than CUDDLING!! O_O
Resident owl.
That's not true :(
I do like them especially for the cuddling part.. >_<
Cmon, reread what I said that time.. I don't think I twisted it that badly =/
Anyway, to clear it up (and to brag a bit :P ), I do have nice cute newborn puppies here, to love and cuddle.. Not for... other stuff O_o
What kind?

Yorkshire terriers!
3 Small cute and most adorable ones ^_^
I'm a link too
ZOMG CUTE! *cuddle cuddle*

They are *_*
Btw, the photo doesn't show it, but they're so small that I can easily hold all 3 of them in a single palm ^_^

Those are so, so, SO CUTE! Names? :D

Hmm... *thinks how to transliterate that*
The names are from some older russian story thing.. They sound kind of like

...so sweet! ^_^ Sa-ti traiasca si sa fie sanatosi!

Wait.. umm... what??
What does that mean? O_o
*confused*
...the quiet ones are always to be suspected, because they're most likely up to something. However, that doesn't mean that non-quiet ones shouldn't be suspected. Heck, everybody is to be suspected. So we're suspecting you too. ^_^
Resident owl.
...yanno, the whole thing that "you never suspect the quiet ones".

"Agent Whitman"
Reality is a formality.
So she would be the precedent for Stef becoming an agent?
And with this precedent, if Carol went mad, why did they make an agent out of an already insane person (and another woman too)?
And how/why did she become an agent? Does it have anything to do with her relationship with Ryan?
And this explains why on Emma's wiki page says that she was for a time the agency's sole female agent :D
Resident owl.
So she would be the precedent for Stef becoming an agent?
Yeah, she's probably the most relevant precedent.
And with this precedent, if Carol went mad, why did they make an agent out of an already insane person (and another woman too)?
The format of the experiment was different, since with Carol there was no mirror involved (this was fairly important factor with Stef, as it technically can get her classified under "weapons research").
And how/why did she become an agent?
This you can wait for. :P
Does it have anything to do with her relationship with Ryan?
It absolutely did.

That just reminded me of something...
*goes write down the something*
So she became an agent after kinda bleeding to death in a blackout zone because Ryan felt too guilty and loved her too much to let her go? And after she became an agent she wanted to kill everybody because she was blaming them all?
Resident owl.
O_O
So she became an agent after kinda bleeding to death in a blackout zone because Ryan felt too guilty and loved her too much to let her go?
Yup.
And after she became an agent she wanted to kill everybody because she was blaming them all?
No, it wasn't her fault, none of it stemmed from blame or hate or guilt, like the normal, bad kind of crazy, it was beyond her control.
Reality is a formality.
...will probably find out what it's all about. Think 'nanites' :p
Aha. So she just went crazy. Couldn't handle the i'm-an-agent-now-zomg-wtf?
Resident owl.
...this I cannot say. Sorry. But, it's sad, and will make sense when revealed.

So is there a third book? Do we now egerly await the adventures of agent stef, or is the mirrorverse done with?
There's at least 6 books, or 7? in the forums, there's speculation over 3rd book and there's also all titles from the books to come.
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
There's seven planned, and with titles, though there are more to come, just not sure of their order or titles.

...and your author takes a short break. Like short, cause I know if do anything long, you'll be crying for my blood. Need to get some website stuff done, tidy up a few things, and maybe polish off the plot a bit, but then we'll be back with something that amounts to...
Stef, Curt and Grigori do Russia!
Well, not really, but you know what I mean, road trip! >_>
And seriously, I don't know about other authors, but I wouldn't have gone through all of this set-up, caused you all so much pain and ended on a punchline if I was just going to end it there. MV is my verse and, I'm going to be writing it until I can't write any more.

Great. First comment here but this is a great story. I'd wish on a mirror for it to be made into a movie but they would just F it up.
If it was a mirror wish, they couldn't fsck it up, it would precisely as you imagined it!

Agent Stef (Spyder) will probably take a while getting use to being what she is. At least by this time she has been re-alive for almost 3 weeks and gotten use to no heart beat.
...well, to be fair, she's spent a lot of that time unconscious in one way or another. >_>
Reality is a formality.
I was reading through that last chapter, thinking, "yeah ok, stef's a gonner, but hey, at least we get closure.
AND THEN. I. READ. THIS.
you are by all means awesomeness personified. This, and Mirrorfall, have been so brilliant to read, and now, I find there is more to come.
I suppose I could be all prissy and say "oh, well, stef probably ain't the full deal anymore", but I mean, she has been saved from death so many times, I reckon even a small component of her being ressurrected is a pretty good deal, let's be honest.
I am awaiting your next endevour with glee. :D
Yeah, that last chapter is eeeevil. >_> Everything's wrapped up so nice and tight, and I suppose, if there are any people out there that hate Stef, they can stop reading there and have her be dead. :P
you are by all means awesomeness personified
^_^ *bow* Thanks!
his, and Mirrorfall, have been so brilliant to read, and now, I find there is more to come.
Until I'm the non-resurrectable kind of dead, there will always be more to come. :D
I suppose I could be all prissy and say "oh, well, stef probably ain't the full deal anymore
Yeah, but you'd be wrong. :P She's still Stef, just with a couple of extras, and the ability to watch YouTube in her head. ^_^
I am awaiting your next endevour with glee. :D
Not sure when the first chapter of Mirrorshades is going up, but in the meantime there'll be other stuff (help us con Flexy into writing fic!).

I think Stef would have just to much fun watching YouTube in her head. Though if she is ever standing around laughing and staring at nothing we will know what she is doing then. Well have a good guess at least, with Stef you never can tell for sure.

"Stef, are you watching YouTube again?"
"Nope."
"IMing the tech recruits?"
"Nope."
"Prank calling people with your brain?"
"Nope."
"...then what then?"

indeed. But if you ask this 4 times, you get 5 different answers...
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
So it is in fact, the stef, the whole stef, and nothing but the stef? :P
(sorry, just got back from the legal challenge. all the layer talk rubs of on ya. XD)
well then, I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS WHATSOEVER. you have in fact concocted the perfect conclusion, good for people who dislike stef, good for those who do. awesome.
... who even dislikes the little crazy girl who's all grown into a crazy young woman; but still is a crazy kid?
Kids are adorable little creatures. Even if they are very crazy... and if they're too old to be a kid... and they don't consider themselves part of humanity.
AL13N is my name and head-biting is my game.
...I mean, they might have some horrific brain damage that renders them completely incapable of something that the rest of us know is practically compulsary, ie, thinking Stef is awesome.
...but there would have to be some people who dislike her.

I think it is that Ryan has had a temporary mental block placed on all memories of Stef.
Y'know, so his judgement is no longer compromised by his feelings for her.
It also explains why he doesn't jump up an hug Stef on sight - he now knows that she's an unusual new agent - maybe even how/where she comes from, but has forgotten their shared history (and so his feelings for her as well).
Or maybe - the punishment was to have just his feelings for Stef deleted. He might still know her, but be unable to emotionally connect. (but perhaps he can rediscover them - hence the "temporary" part).
As an agent, she should have gained all the usual agent super-abilities - but perhaps she needs to learn how to use them first? That will be interesting... Scanning, Shifting, etc.
I wonder whether the OS will give her a third voice to deal with... maybe along with bold voice we'll get {code} voice too... heh heh, imagining those two arguing in stef's head ^_^
And as to her heart - maybe it's had it's generic wish-granting power removed and now only exists to keep her alive forever - so it can't be removed and used for other purposes, and so is no longer the threat that a lose piece of mirror would be.
Do I get points? ^_^
Zomg - Just had this thought... Stef = Hacker. Stef + NewCustomisedAgentOS => Agent.... maybe NewCustomisedAgentOS has bugs? Like, exploitable ones with which a hacker might play...
Like rewriting what {code} voice says...
Ahem...
{code}- That's my voice >_>Hey, I'm not yours! I am myself, and I belong only to myselfYeah, but you sit in my head, and bug me, and can't get out, and no one else can hear you, so that kind of makes you me voice :P
Call me yours again, and I won't let you sleep tonight.. Even heard any Mexican songs? *evil grin*Okay okay! whatever you say, just stay quiet -_-
*hands both of you ice-cream*

Forgive the harsh language, but that would just be really, really fucking cruel. No, they didn't do anything of the kind. (I think I'd have trouble writing something that cruel).
It also explains why he doesn't jump up an hug Stef on sight
It's actually more that he saw her while she was in "beta", that this is definitely not the first time he's seen her since her disappearing in the recycling chamber, and that he already *cuddles*'d her enough, for this, he's actually doing his part to treat her as an adult (heh) and giving her her first formal greeting with her new rank.
As an agent, she should have gained all the usual agent super-abilities - but perhaps she needs to learn how to use them first?
Yup, except for the speed/strength/ninja-skills stuff, that's toned down a lot more than in a normal agent, at best she's around Mag's power level, and that's probably being generous.
I wonder whether the OS will give her a third voice to deal with
Nah, two's enough, though technically Ryan could be a voice in her head now. :P
And as to her heart - maybe it's had it's generic wish-granting power removed and now only exists to keep her alive forever - so it can't be removed and used for other purposes, and so is no longer the threat that a lose piece of mirror would be.
That would so be awesome if they could do that, but unfortunately, you can't take away the mirror's inherent wish-granting ability.
Like, exploitable ones with which a hacker might play...
"ooh, what does this do?"
*zap*
"owie..."
...
"what does this do? Ok...now I'm purple, I kinda dig that."
"what does this do? What the f- OSHI-"

Spyder + AgentOS !
I imagine she must have had some fun during beta testing; although i think Jonesy will have tired of it.
There is just the thing that Stef may be reluctant to hack with her own OS: ie: if she fiddles with it wrongly, she effectively changes herself... and she's afraid of change...

And I'd imagine Jonesy firewalled a lot of it for her own good, and he's slightly better at it than she is. :P
