And now...

[Read this second, read the post below first.]
It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke.
And for anyone who doesn't believe me yet...
It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke. It's a joke.
We all good now?
Basically, I was having one of those crappy write-emo moments where I was worried about the future, about when I stick MV on Kindle and whether or not the series will take off.
I sometimes feel like the appeal is limited, like the size of the fanbase I have now is all I'll ever have (which I know is bullshit, but paranoia, yay...).
So I did an impromptu brainstorming session with Matthew about what the most...clichedly mainstream, anti-Mirrorfallish thing we could think of, the results of which are that last post - there were other details, but that stuff was the high notes (low notes?).
I figure this is probably the time to talk about my writing goals (Joe Konrath's blog post "I made $100k in the first ten days of January" sort of made me want to crawl into a dark hole and never come out).
My five-year plan (which probably contains a lot of wishful thinking) looks like this:
Year 1 (2012) - I want to make 100 sales (paid sales, not free downloads).
Year 2 (2013 - presuming the Mayans were trolling us) - I want to make 1000 paid sales (and a ton of free downloads).
Year 3 (2014) - I'd like to make enough so that I can go down to part time hours, to have more time to write - this would probably be in the neighbourhood of $25k after tax, though I may be able to budget for less.
Year 4 (2015) - ...who's going to have time for writing after hoverboards are released? :P
Either continue to do part-time hours or try to write full-time.
Year 5 (2016) - Write full-time for a living.
I think I can achieve Year 1's goals, and maybe even Year 2's, but it's thinking bigger than that that really scares me.
The goal I think that will really give my non-existent self-confidence a boost will be when I reach 7000 sales - I remember a chestnut of wisdom given to me when I got my first rejection letter - that a book in Oz needed to have 7000 potential sales before it would be considered.
I know I'm not going legacy pub, but for some reason, it's still something that's stuck with me, it's just another wall to get through.
This year:
*I want to edit MF and get it out
*Start on the MH rewrite
*Finish Oubliette
*Write Make-Believe, the young!Stef novel
Next year, after MB, I think I'd like to do something different, and maybe have a year where I release one short story a week, as it would give us a chance to play in different areas of the MV that usually get ignored.
That scared me. Too many boobs. Everywhere.
Short story year sounds so so so awesome, pluses it's a good starting place to get people to read a random awesome from :)
100 paid sales - you have over 50 fans on facebook, most of them would probably buy at least one book. Buying more would cause you to easily get that, so you're well in there. Then there just needs to be reviews. Which I, for one, am totally happy to gush in. And all that jazz. I have very little idea about all the other goals, but the early ones are solidly doable. Also, don't forget that ebooks are the gift that keeps on giving. Once they're up for sale, they're up for sale, and then you can let the monies roll in :D
There's no place I can be, since I found Serenity.

She reaches critical mammary mass all by herself. :P

I think it could really be fun. I've got so many little random ideas that I could do as shorts, and just little bits of the world that can be built out, or whatever.
I mean, I have this story about Stef and Ryan and a missing misick scout troop (those little mouse-sized fae), and how they seek shelter in Agency dropboxes due to a storm...but something like that doesn't fit into a regular book.

I know, I know, and I see those stories of authors who have reasonable money bins of their own who started off with like 12 sales a year, but I worry that I'll be one of those people who just stay on 12 a year.
Reality is a formality.
But if there were twelve books for sale, I'd buy all twelve. So... 4? books at the moment. 4 bought by me. Now you only need three more people to buy them.
And then they will get many stars because we love your writing. Then it will get on other places, as we spread word. Good things will happen because you have worked so hard and are so good. :) You shall see. And you owe us a bonus story if you reach goals :P
(to clarify: extra writing as a hmm, punishment is slightly the wrong word, need new langauge, anyway... for not believing in yourself enough :D )
Also: MICE FAIRIES :D Yay :D That's so so so squeeeee! Can haz?

stormy, you'll have 100 paid sales the first month you have a novel for sale.
You need any copyediting, pro editing, formatting, ect, you let me know. also, occasional email prods ;)
that said, as bad as the plot was, if YOU wrote that plotline, I could see it working

Haha, I could almost see it working too. Sorta "Girl with the Dragon Tatoo" meets "Warehouse 13."
Like I've said before, I think if/when this ever gets made into a series, I think Stef would end up looking like Claudia Donovan. Not saying Claudia's not cute, but still...she's a cute!hacker, not a smelly!hacker...
Reality is a formality.
I could see that. I don't think she'd be a good Stef, but I could see whoever controlled the tv project doing that to stef.

...things (generally speaking) have to fit into nice little boxes, or have small acceptable ranges of variation.

The first couple of goals are quite reasonable. I for one will buy all the things, and encourage friends to do the same.
Also, I think your super-cliche story needs more vampires. I hear they're all the rage.

It's the ones after the first couple that worry me. -_- I don't think I'm going to assuage my paranoia until I do it. -_-

It would explain why Stef hates the sun... :P

You're wasting your breath, she wont listen to people tell her that.
...part of me wants to write it, just for the lulz. :D

I was amusedly wondering where you were going with that post, not believing it for a second - remembering the last time you did pretty much exactly this; you even started a story with the concept, and got up to her meeting Dorian at her door I think... or was it Ryan? I don't quite remember...
As for the goals, I think they seem quite reasonable, especially the first couple. But then, I'm not an oracle, able to see the future...
...cause that's a trope a lot of writers follow, to introduce the love interest in the first or second chapter.
